Make Social Networking Great Again.
MyWBS first went online in November 1999 — and quickly grew to 10,000 members before the world even had a name for social networking. But the hardware of 1999 was weak: the whole site ran on a single FreeBSD server with just two CPUs, and as the community grew from a few dozen members to 10,000, one machine simply couldn’t serve everyone. I asked members to pay for the service, but the bills were paid by me alone — so I spent the years since building for everyone else: Caltech, MySpace, Amazon, Apple, Nexstar Media, Disney, and others. Still, this place never left my mind.
I started programming what became MyWBS.com in C++ and Perl in 1998, before it had a name, and that first version is archived in a time capsule, along with all members’ profiles and pictures. In 2026, I built the second version from the ground up in the Go language, with the help of AI, for your stories, your photos, your people. The world deserves to know the true history of social networking from those who were there at the beginning, not from those who came five years later and monetized someone else’s ideas. If you were here in 1999, you were always in my Top 8.
