π¬ Live Chat
The room where everyone is: real-time talk, photos, reactions, and a 24-hour memory.
The Live Chat is one room for the
whole site. Whoever is signed in and has the page open is there, and
what's said fades away after a day.
How it works
- Open Chat from the top bar or the left rail.
The Here now list shows who has the room open;
a name links to that member's profile.
- Messages appear for everyone the instant they're sent β no
refreshing, no waiting. Only the newest 100 messages
are kept, and nothing survives longer than 24 hours
β messages and photos alike vanish, for everyone, by themselves.
- Leave the tab open in the background and the page title counts
what you missed; a red New messages line marks where you
left off. The π button turns on desktop notifications.
Writing
- Enter sends, Shift+Enter starts
a new line. *bold*, _italic_,
`code` and ``` fenced blocks ``` are rendered;
links are clickable.
- Type : and a few letters for emoji
(:tada:, :heart:, :thinking:β¦);
/me waves writes an action line;
/shrug and /tableflip do what you
think.
- Photos: press π·, paste a screenshot, or drop an
image onto the page. It goes through the same
upload pipeline as every photo here
(metadata stripped, converted to WebP), shows inline, and is deleted
with the chat after 24 hours β it never lands in your albums.
- Hover a message to react with an emoji; hover
your own to edit or delete it
(the β key edits your last message).
Staying decent
- The community rules apply in the
room like everywhere else. Hover any message to β
report it (the text is quoted for the moderators) or to
π« block its author.
- Blocking works both ways here too: you and a blocked member
stop seeing each other in the room β instantly, including what
was already said.
- Moderators can delete any message; a suspended account is
dropped from the room the moment it's suspended.
Nothing in the chat is searchable, indexed, or kept
beyond the day. If a conversation deserves to last, that's what
posts and
messages are for.
